Earth Connections
Ecology is the study of plants and animals in their environment.  We will become ecologists by completing activities 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.

  • Study a natural area to find out which plants and animals live there
  • Examine tree stump rings to uncover the age and growth patterns of the tree
  • Learn how zoos are working to preserve endangered species
  • Investigate animal adaptations in the Zoo's Windows to Conservation classroom
  • Uncover how environmental problems impact primates as we tour the Tropical Forest Complex

Oil Up
Oil is both an energy source and a raw material that is used to make many of the things you use everyday.  In this program, held in the PPG Aquarium, students will examine the positives and negatives of petroleum products.  Students will participate in activities 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10.  Please note that activity 10 will be started in the classroom, but must be completed at home.

  • Discover the origins of oil
  • Find out where oil is found on our planet
  • Make and clean up an oil spill
  • Discover how many products we use daily are made from petroleum.  Scouts will receive a log sheet to take home and record the number of products containing petroleum that they use in the week following the program.
  • Learn how oil spills affect ocean habitats, as we tour the PPG Aquarium and the Zoo's new Water's Edge exhibit

Plants and Animals
Join us as we examine how the world depends on plants and animals.  Students will participate in activities 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10.

  • Discover how scientists classify animals into groups using their unique characteristics
  • Examine safe methods to control pests
  • Take an up-close look at animal adaptations while touring the Asian Forest and African Savanna

Wildlife
Pennsylvania contains a wonderful variety of wildlife.  Wildlife is found in every corner of the Keystone state.  Examine backyard wildlife as we participate in activities 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 10.

  • Explore the Pennsylvania state animals
  • Discover animal adaptations
  • Learn how to identify the venomous snakes found in Pennsylvania
  • Observe Pennsylvania wildlife as we tour Kids Kingdom and the Worlds of Discovery
