Benefits Overview
The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium believes that the type and quality of benefits offered to the employees is an integral part of job satisfaction representing the strong commitment that the organization is willing to make for a better work environment.
A comprehensive benefit package including health care coverage, dental, vision, Member Assistance Program, life insurance (2 policies), is available to all full-time employees without an employee contribution or deductible which provides flexibility to meet the employee's and family members' health needs.
Health care benefits including dental and vision are offered at no cost to full-time employees with coverage beginning after 90 days or the beginning of the month immediately following the 90th day of employment and successful completion of the initial hire period. Health care is purchased on a monthly basis and can only be added at the start of each month on the Zoo's group plan.
Life insurance is also offered at no cost to the employee with coverage beginning on the first day of full-time employment.
Benefits
Medical - Insurance coverage is provided by Blue Cross/Blue Shield through the Select Blue Plan. This plan is designed to provide quality health care services in the most cost effective way. This plan has open enrollment 12 months of the year and does not contain pre-existing condition qualifiers.
Currently, in network Doctor's office visit co-pay is $5, Specialist $5 and Emergency Room visits are $5 as well. Prescription drug co-pay costs are $5, 10 or $25. Effective July 1, 2004 Physician referrals will be eliminated.
Retirement 403(b) - Full-time employees' whether union or non-union can open an account after successful completion of their initial probationary period.
NON-union employees are eligible for the employment bonus after 1 year of full-time employment.
Union employees also have a mandatory retirement plan through Laborers' Combined Funds and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Non-union employees are not eligible for participation.
Vision - Annual check up and frames/lens including contacts. Minimal out-of-pocket expense is incurred if you stay within plan coverage.
Dental - Semi-annual check up and preventive services at 100% coverage; basic services at 80%; major services at 50%.
Life Insurance - Two (2) policies are provided to all full-time employees at no charge.
Life Insurance Plan A:
- Long and short-term disability
- Accidental Death and dismemberment
- Death benefit - salary up to a max of $50,000
Life Insurance Plan B:
- Death benefit - Employee = $10,000
Spouse = $1,000
Child = $100 to 500
- AD&D - $4,000 to 16,000
- Loss of Time - $250 week
Vacation: Non-union full-time employees immediately accrue time on monthly basis for use in the first year of employment and as follows:
0 - 5 years service = 2 weeks
6 - 9 years service = 3 weeks
10 + years service = 4 weeks
Union employees are eligible for vacation time after completion of one year of employment and as follows:
1 - 4 years service = 2 weeks
5 - 9 years services = 3 weeks
10 - 14 years service = 4 weeks
15 or more years service = 5 weeks
Personal time is also accrued on an annual basis for union members.
Work Hours: The Zoo is a 7-day-a-week operation, closed only on Christmas, New Years and Thanksgiving Day where staffing is minimal. Flextime and flexible scheduling are available for non-union employees.
Union employee schedules are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Generally there are two shifts, daylight and midnight. Most employees are scheduled for the day shift.
Holidays: Union employees receive 11 paid holidays. Non-union has one additional day.
Zoo Passes: Full-time and year round part-time employees receive 25 free guest passes each year.
Rental: Full-time and part-time year round employees who have at least three years tenure can utilize rental space at no-charge.
Zoo Camp: Discounted pricing for the participation of employees children.
Learning & Development: The PZA promotes and supports employee development on multiple levels including monetary assistance and when appropriate, time off.
Behind the Scene: Tours for full-time employee guests when possible.
