Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a city of Pittsburgh resident to work at the zoo?
No. City residency is not a requirement of employment at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. The Zoo is not owned nor operated by the City of Pittsburgh. The Zoo is a private non-profit organization.
Where can I get an employment application?
Employment applications are available from the Receptionist on the second floor of the Education Complex. You can pick up an application any day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Education Complex is located in the zoo. Take the path off to the right of the carousel continuing up the short slope to the building entrance. You can fill out the application there or take it with you and return it at a later time. Application will be kept on file for six months.
Can I send a resume instead of completing an application?
Resumes are accepted at any time. Applicants are required to complete an application at the time of the interview. Resumes are kept on file for six months.
Will I be contacted regarding the status of my application?
We are unable to respond to inquires regarding applicant status due to the volume of applications that are received. Only those individuals whose background and experience closely matches our needs will be contacted if an appropriate opening exists.
Can I apply for more than one position?
Yes, you can apply for as many positions as you like. However, different positions require different knowledge, skills and abilities.
What is it like to work at the zoo?
A lot of our employees find the work to be very rewarding and consider their occupation to be a calling rather than a job. Zoo jobs are not glamorous or easy. Working with animals requires working in all types of weather. Animals need to be cared for around-the-clock everyday irrespective of weather conditions (including weekends and holidays).
What knowledge, skills and abilities are needed to work at the zoo?
The knowledge, skills and abilities vary greatly depending on the position that you are interested in pursuing. Some positions require advanced degrees, while others require less schooling.
What types of positions are available?
The majority of employees at the zoo do not work directly with the animals, but they find their work just as rewarding. Some of the other types of jobs include fundraisers, graphic designers, marketing professionals and event planners, teachers, accountants, gardeners, laborers, skilled trade people, human resources specialists, cashiers, administrative assistants, and many other positions. The zoo traditionally experiences a very low turn over rate. Please refer to the Employment Opportunities page for current a list of openings.
How do I apply for seasonal positions?
The zoo holds two annual Summer Open House Job Fairs. Generally speaking, there is one the Saturday before Easter and then another job fair one month prior to the Easter date. These events are listed on the zoo's website under employment opportunities. Watch for these notices early in the calendar year. Job descriptions will be available and applications will need to be completed when you attend the Job Fair.
